What is water hammer?

Water hammer is the impact of water flow on PVC pipelines, resulting in a serious water impact, due to water hammer generated by the instantaneous pressure can be up to several times the normal working pressure in the pipeline or even dozens of times. this large-scale pressure fluctuations, it is very easy to damage the pipeline.

What causes water hammer?

1 Pipeline air can not be discharged easy to produce water hammer

Pipeline has a high and low undulation of the situation, the position of the pipeline is higher, easy to accumulate air, because the volume of air under pressure will be compressed to become smaller, but the internal pressure will be a substantial increase, will produce water hammer.

2 water valve open too large, exhaust not in time is also easy to produce water hammer.

When the pipeline piping to complete the water, and the water valve open too fast, too big, to exhaust untimely, a large amount of air left in the pipe, plus the impact of excessive water flow, will produce water hammer.

How to prevent water hammer?

1, Extend the time it takes to open and close the valve. Avoid valves being opened or closed quickly to minimize the water hammer effect caused by opening and closing them too quickly.

2, Remove air from pipes. Ensure that the pipeline is full of water before turning on the pumps, especially by installing automatic air venting valves at the high points of long distance water pipelines.

3, Install check valves and cushioning devices. For example, install micro-resistance slow-closing check valves and water hammer eliminators on the pump outlet pipe to reduce the impact of water hammer when the pump is stopped.

4, Reasonably design the piping layout. Avoid excessively long, curved pipes or sudden changes in pipe diameter to reduce water flow resistance.

5, Use pipes made of soft materials. Such as rubber, PVC, etc., to absorb the impact from water hammer.

6, Control the speed of water flow. When using faucets, control the speed of water flow to avoid sudden shut-offs that create water hammer.

7, Inspect and maintain the plumbing system regularly. Repair leaky and deteriorated pipes in a timely manner to reduce the risk of water hammer caused by broken pipes.

8, Install pressure regulators and pressure reducing valves. Regulate water pressure to a suitable range to reduce the extent of water hammer effect.

9, Install a water hammer arrest in front of the valve. This is an expansion tank used to minimize shock waves and absorb over pressure.

10, Increase the diameter of the circuit in front of the valve To reduce the pressure in this part of the circuit and reduce the occurrence of water hammer.
